I haven't started reading yet but I opened the book and the inside is printed upside-down... The text on the spine is upside-down from the inside of the book. I easily flipped it the correct way to read it, but I'm wondering if this was this on purpose??? ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ Very strange
For those of us waiting for Season 3, it’s better than fan fiction
Good book
Without trying to spoil anything (maybe a couple very slight spoilers), I'll explain what I think is good about the book, and what's not so good, and what's straight up bad.Good:1. The last fourth of the book was fairly entertaining.2. Hopper's dynamic with Delgado was fun to read.3. The whole mystery that gets solved at the end explains why Hopper is apt to believe Joyce and investigate Hawkins Lab in S1, which I appreciated.4. I felt Hopper was mostly in-character, especially with El, if not a little over the top at times. I'll explain below. Not great:1. Hopper didn't swear as much as I think he normally would, and maybe that sounds stupid, but he swears a lot in the show, so it didn't read quite like he would talk. In addition, he made it clear that he was motivated by doing good in the world. While I think that's in Hopper, I don't believe it's fully realized, as in Season 1, especially, he's reluctant to get involved. Could be his daughter's death and subsequent divorce changed him, but I have a hard time believing he was totally altruistic to a fault before all that happened.2. A certain character dies a bit abruptly, and no mention is made of what came of *their* death. The person was apparently a parent, but no mention made of their child throughout the book, and when they died, it was kind of like, "Oh, well. Onto the next problem."Bad:1. The author described EVERY SINGLE thing that everyone was wearing, even passing pedestrians. It really slowed down the beginning of the book and was pointless. I get it, you want to portray that it was the 70s, but a brief mention of one or two people is enough. He did similarly with rooms anyone walked into.2. The editor must not have been that good, because Sara was spelled Sarah at one point, and it was a glaring mistake. Also, the book took place in July, and Sara was attending public school. Granted, the author is not from the U.S., so it's understandable he didn't know that, but any editor should know that school's out at that time of the year.3. Sara's age! This bugged the crap out of me, and I couldn't get over it. I'm a teacher and mom, so very familiar with young children. In the S1 flashbacks, Sara was likely about 5. In the book, she's 6, and she hasn't even been diagnosed, yet. Which means by the time she dies, she's gotta be 7? 8? There's no way the child in S1 was 7 or 8-years-old. In addition, Diane kept carrying her everywhere. 6-year-olds aren't typically carried everywhere. In a flashback to where Sara was 14 months old, she yelled, "Apples!", and most toddlers at that age know 4-5 words, and probably aren't going to refer to something in the plural. Just the knowledge of child development was lacking.4. Hopper's relationship with Diane was endearing, but she was trusting to a fault. There were no hints of problems. He has a new woman partner? No big deal. Hanging out with a young, female gang member? Totally okay. They never fought, and it made me wonder what the heck happened between them once Sara got diagnosed, because, seemingly, they'd be able to easily work through it.5. Sara and Diane were hardly featured. I would have loved to see more of a Hopper/Sara dynamic, but alas, Sara was only in like 3 or 4 short scenes.6. There are hardly any stakes in the book. The majority of it is boring. If it weren't about Hopper, I would have stopped reading after the first couple chapters. Which is why I say it's a money grab. They know that people are going to read it, regardless. If it were about a random man, I feel like more effort would have been put in. An example of stakes...Sara and Diane's lives were threatened...but we all know they don't die, so that's not a stake. His partner, Delgado, would have been an excellent stake to use, but Hopper assures El early on that Delgado is alive and well. (Not a spoiler because...the author spoiled it himself.) It's like he was trying to take all the suspense out of the book.As a whole, I was disappointed. If you're looking for a book that deals with Hopper's familial relationships and gets into Sara's diagnosis and death, you won't find it here. If you're looking for a mediocre crime drama that's lacking in stakes and suspense, give it a go.
I have been obsessed with Stranger Things since its premier. Since its release, I have collected much of what has been released in the Extended Universe series. This includes the comic books from Dark Horse and the novel series. After the release of Gwenda Bond's excellent "Suspicious Minds" prequel novel, I was ecstatic to find a second novel centered around my favorite character -- Jim Hopper -- that explores his past which was only scratched at in the series. Now, having seen the third season of Stranger Things, this novel is all the more wonderful, heartbreaking, and meaningful. The television show brought us the 80's and Reagan era; "Suspicious Minds" brought us back to the late 60's/early 70's Nixon and Vietnam era; and now, "Darkness on the Edge of Town" brings us to the late 70's Jimmy Carter era. And what better place to explore than late 70's New York City. A time when the city was on the brink of utter collapse. Author Adam Christopher brilliantly exposes the reader to this world that is the complete opposite of 1980's Hawkins, Indiana. He had me hooked from the very first pages as he brings the characters of Jim Hopper, and his family, back to life and into a whole new adventure that completely captivated me.The story follows Hopper on a mission to uncover the secret to a series of murders, which eventually leads him to discovering a greater, sinister and "stranger" plot going on. The story is engrossing and gritty. Whereas the television show focuses more on the supernatural and science-fiction genres, this novel is crime and mystery novel in every sense of the word yet it compliments the show perfectly. In doing so, Christopher also manages to introduce us to some brilliant new characters such as Jim Hopper's partner, Detective Rosario Delgado who I absolutely fell in love with. Her banter with Hopper is hilarious, fun, and engaging. Her storyline is excellent and she brings a great fire to the story. Can she become a character in Season 4 of the show, please??What I loved the most about the novel, however, was its structure. The book begins by putting us in a place of comfort and familiarity -- with Hopper celebrating his first Christmas with his new daughter, Jane, or Eleven as we've come to know her. Throughout the book, the story intercuts between this setting and with 1977 New York City as Hopper reveals the secrets of his past to Eleven. Christopher brilliantly establishes the terrific relationship between Hopper and El that completely compliments what we saw in Season 2, and eventually season 3. The attention to detail Christopher has committed to in the novel is seen all throughout. This is an absolutely brilliant must-read for any fan of Stranger Things. The story is captivating, the characters are fun to spend time with, and it expands upon the Stranger Things mythology brilliantly.
